Remember those days when you’re told that second place simply means being the “winner of losers”? Well, we’re living in different times and such a mindset has been replaced by something called a participation trophy. (Yes, long before mental health considerations were even a thing.) These days, if you don’t score a podium finish, you’re still a winner of sorts and perhaps even given a prize as a form of encouragement disguised as a pat on the back. Jeweller Tiffany & Co. and serial troller MSCHF are giving those with an empty trophy cabinet something new to fill up the real estate with: an actual participation trophy. Tiffany & Co. is able to see the funny side of this. After all, its other rep as the most prominent sports trophy maker in the world is already firmly established. According to the jeweller, it makes up to 65 trophies a year ranging from the Larry O’Brien trophy to the Vince Lombardi trophy to the US Open trophy. This design, however, takes the cake. Titled The Ultimate Participation Trophy, it features 900 grams of sterling silver handcrafted by the same workshops as the aforementioned trophies. But peek at the motif on the top of the trophy as it is an amalgamation of some of the sports that the esteemed jeweller has stakes in: a shoulder-padded horse rider is seen holding a tennis racquet and American football with another soccer ball at his feet whilst the horse he is riding appears to also be ready to punt a basketball. This metal figurine is held up by a stainless steel stem coated in a signature Tiffany blue and mounted on a white marble and felted wool base. MSCHF revealed that only 100 units will be made at a cost of US$1,000 a pop. Interested winners should register on the link below before the official drop on May 2. Don't lose out again.
