What do you make of a tennis player serving top speed balls with a pink racquet patterned with cherry blossom prints? Well, either this player is an anime character or we just made the whole thing up. Lucky for us, Naomi Osaka is the real deal and she will also be the one with said pink racquet come this edition of the U.S. Open when it gets underway at the end of August. Being the highest paid elite athlete in the world does come with its own set of benefits such as having your fave artist Takashi Murakami on speed dial to create an exclusive pattern for your gear. This cherry blossom print not only graces the world number two’s Yonex racquet (it also features lucky symbols on it such as a kangaroo silhouette and a bear holding a stalk of flower), the sporting goods manufacturer has also created a matching tennis bag for the occasion that features cameos of Murakami’s famed smiley flowers. So, don’t take Osaka’s chipper pink gear and on-court nonchalance as signs of weakness. She might not be on the winning end of the equation in recent times but the 23-year-old defending champ of the U.S. Open title is still capable of pulling off a surprise – and this time around, with the most kawaii professional racquet in existence.
