“Victoire is my first name, it’s also the name of a model, Christian Dior’s favourite model. Moreover, my mother adored Victoire Montesquiou. I owe this name to her,” she wrote on the page filed under the letter V of her new book. Victoire de Castellane has been at Dior for over 20 years and this is the first time that she has done an introspection of all of her accomplishments at the house and even shares personal anecdotes about her own life story – which she rarely does or perhaps has never done so publically. The A to Z of Victoire de Castellane is a 400-page tome published by Rizzoli which is mostly made up of her personal illustrations involving sketches of her fantastical adventures with Monsieur Dior. What is perhaps the most interesting anecdote about her work is captured under the heading Correspondence. She said, "Every collection since 1999 has been a form of correspondence between Christian Dior and myself... My collections are not unimaginative, I create these collections as though I am writing letters to Christian Dior. And he doesn’t need to answer me.” Although A to Z of Victoire de Castellane is marketed as de Castellane reflecting on all of her collections – from her debut leading up to the 2019’s Gem Dior – she includes a few tidbits of information that requires one to decode or read between the lines. One possible clapback simply states: “Fairies aren’t my thing! I don’t believe in them.”
