For all the chunky layers of jewellery that style icon Iris Apfel wears on the daily, you’d be surprised to learn that she hasn’t been commissioned to design her own – until now. The 98-year-old got her first shot thanks to Michel Bernardaud, the chairman of leading French porcelain firm Bernardaud (his family has been in the business for more than 155 years). Titled Be Bold Over, Apfel has designed 15 statement costume jewellery that took just under two years to realise. Don’t be surprised that she has taken her self-coined “more is more and less is a bore” approach. Her necklaces, in particular, are striking – not just in design but in proportions. The Adam long necklace, for instance, features an eight-inch stick figure wearing a 22-karat gold pair of trunks. And this isn’t even its lengthiest piece with some stretching up to 20 inches. And this collection isn’t a one-off either; word is that Apfel has already worked on the sequel to this collection.
