Know Your Vino: Penfolds’s ‘The Rewards of Patience’ book

Want the chief winemaker of one of the biggest wine labels in the world and a select panel of 30 vino experts in your living room guiding you through the red in your glass? While we don’t like to burst your bubble, the chances of that happening are probably as rare as the recent release of the 2004 Block 42 Cabernet Sauvignon by Penfolds. However, the next best thing has to be a copy of The Rewards of Patience, which is now in its seventh edition. The new 310-page tome can be probably described as a ‘hand-in-hand’ walkthrough of Penfolds wine glossary and an independent assessment of the Australian winemaker’s archives led by veteran auctioneer and Master of Wine Andrew Caillard. He gathered a panel of 30 independent wine critics and commentators from various parts of the world as well as Penfolds winemakers to comb through over 500 wines from the archives. And when we say comb, we mean to scrutinise every nose and taste notes ranging from the iconic Grange series to the rare 1962 Penfolds Bin 60A to the unreleased 2009 and 2010 stock. (If the bottle ain’t readying for drinking, this book will tell you when.) It’s not often you’d hear us telling you to put down the wine glass for a book, but if you haven’t got your hands on this tome then you ought to. The Rewards of Patience is available at leading wine retailers.
